THE EVERYDAY PEOPLE of CHINA

A Dangerous Hobby

Riding, not driving, any form a transport in China is a dangerous hobby. In spite of this, millions continue to ride their bicycles. The slightly better-off now ride electric bikes, mopeds or scooters.

As more and more (corrupt) people buy cars, the cyclist's life becomes more and more dangerous.

This bloke, who I witnessed being 'ignored' and then hit yesterday was rather lucky. He was wearing a helmet. He's one of a tiny minority who do.

Only because I was watching do I know that the driver of the car was at fault, on this occasion. Cyclists are the ones who would normally run the gauntlet, almost as if they were pedestrians, to which the colour of traffic lights is not of legal concern.

I must admit that I, as a pedestrian, care little about cyclists. They tear-arse down the pavements like they own the bloody things. They are a road vehicle and pavements are for people.
I was, of course, grateful that this bloke got to his feet without to much of a to-do.

Riding in China is a very dangerous hobby, so, beware!
